China Oil Spill Blackens Yellow Sea
An oil slick is covering the Yellow Sea after a pipeline explosion. Efforts are already under way in containing the China oil spill, as oil gathering vessels already have begun trying to soak up as much of the oil as possible. Almost 165 square miles of water is already covered with oil, so the clean up crew will have quite a task ahead of them. It is far smaller than the BP oil spill off Louisiana.
The China oil spill began with exploding pipelines
An oil pipeline exploded on Friday in Dalian, a port city in Liaoning province. The port is one of the largest ports of import in China. The explosion dumped thousands of tons of oil into the ocean, which was set aflame by the explosion. The fire raged for 15 hours before firefighters were able to contain it. Over 1,000 vessels were mobilized to clean up the China oil spill, and they're deploying oil consuming bacteria.
Spill contained early
Tourist areas were easily shut down, but normal shipping activities had resumed by Tuesday. The fire was extinguished early, but original estimates of the size of the oil slick underestimated the amount of oil that had been released. The estimates for the area of water covered by oil have doubled as of Wednesday, though it is nevertheless far smaller than the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The China oil spill, at 200 square miles of water or less, is a tenth the size of the BP oil spill. Dalian officials expect a week or two to be sufficient time to clean up the spill. It is the second largest oil receiving port in China.
Greenpeace sounds off
Greenpeace saw an opportunity in the China oil spill to remind everyone of the risks of depending on fossil fuels. The group also cites the number of coal mining accidents in addition to the Gulf oil spill. The pipelines in questioned are an oil storage facility owned by the China National Petroleum Corporation.
