Frequently Asked Questions...
Does anyone have any facts or info on the Mastiff tomb figurine?
I'm writing a paper on this art piece http://www.artic.edu/aic/collections/artwork/73236 and I can't find any info on the sculpture besides what's provided there. Does anyone know anything about this or know any books, articles or websites where I can get info on this? Much appreciated :3
Answer:
If it's from the Chinese Han dynasty, it must represent a prototypical Tibetan Mastiff. (You can make this supposition based on the fact that the Tibetan Mastiff is the ancient Chinese molosser breed.) I can't give you any info about that specific piece of art, but if you research Tibetan Mastiffs and Chinese tradition as far funereal art was concerned, you can piece the two topics together in reference to this tomb figurine. To start you off, here's info about Tibetan Mastiffs and their history:

Here's info about Chinese tomb art:

Based on the information provided, you can surmise that the statue was intended to be a guardian for the deceased person. Tibetan Mastiffs were (and are) the classic Chinese guard dogs, and so they saw fit to use Tibetan Mastiffs (in the forms of statues) as tomb guards.
