There are more women than ever applying for spots in medical schools all across the country, which is changing the way medicine is taught and practiced. For the last several years, men have outnumbered women in medical schools by a huge margin. Today it's females whose applications pour into admissions office of medical schools. Why? One woman faculty member who has asked to remain anonymous stated that she knows for a fact that women are often denied admission based on their answer to the marriage or career question. The answer the women gives is irrelevant because some male interviewers will bar the woman's admission regardless. So if the woman says she plans to have someone take care of her children, the interviewer will feel that her real job is to raise her children. If she says she's going to raise her children, the interviewer will argue that the candidate doesn't have the necessary committment.
Again and again it became obvious that the male interviewers perceive women as possessing more sensitivity than their fellow male applicants. This feeling has been called a stereotype against women. There are women who are tough as nails and men who will cry over a commercial yet the stereotype persists, and women are discriminated against because of it.
However, there are those men who believe that woman have amazing things to offer the field of medicine. It is believed that women in general are raised to be more open and sensitive, and this can bring something refreshing to the world of medicine. On the other hand, many men who grow up learning aggression from their fathers can be a big problem, however neither generalization is a guarantee in either sex.
