Insurance Industry Beginnings In The UK And The USA
Today, the insurance industry has a wide selection of specialist risk coverage; from covering an expensive piece of artwork, the legs of a famed Broadway dancer to illness and death caused by a new global virus.
After the Great Fire in 1666, several ordinances and laws were enacted directly related to the fire to try to eradicate the wreckage from future infernos. One law, for example, required that each quarter of London be presented with 800 leather buckets and fifty ladders, on top of other firefighting equipment. Every home was required to have buckets, and the occupants had to partake in human chains bucket crews.
The year after the Great Fire, 1667, Dr. Barbon a successful doctor, writer and economist, was the instigator in the founding of the first actual insurance business. It was known as "The Insurance Office" and was situated in a small building neaby London's Royal Exchange (stock market).
To shield the houses and other buildings it was insuring, The Insurance Office created real fire-fighting squads. They were issued identifying badges and equipment. Their task was just to put out fires in the houses they insured.
This led to the formation of other insurance companies. They had names like the Hand-in-Hand and the Friendly Society, and they additionally used their own fire departments. The oldest acknowledged insurance company today goes back to 1710. Primarily recognized as the Sun Fire Office, it was founded not long after the original Fire Office, and in all proabability whilst the first was still operating. The Sun Fire Office, through numerous mergers and acquisitions, is nowadays known as Royal & SunAlliance, the United Kingdom’s largest insurance supplier.
Across the pond in 1752 Benjamin Franklin assisted in the foundation of the insurance industry in the United States when he helped to found the Philadelphia Contributionship for the Insurance of Houses from Loss by Fire. Soon the industry became more complex and so the necessity of having a supervisory body evolved. And so, one hundred years later the 1st insurance commissioner in the United States was appointed in the state of New Hampshire.
Then, almost 100 years later, in the last year of WWII, the McCarran-Ferguson Act was adopted by Congress. This government act stated that the insurance business should be policed by the states and avowed that this was in the best interest of the public.
Many folks are unnerved with the course of investing in life insurance products, in the main because they have to face the outcome of their deaths. However, if they consider that whatever life insurance they purchase they are not buying for themselves. Instead, they are getting it to help their beneficiaries – the survivors who will have to continue once they are gone. And these days there are a great number of other unusual risk aspects to consider; you need insurance if you travel, play sports and insurance for your pets, to name but a few.
