Advantages And Disadvantages Of Digital Photography

Remember when pictures were actual physical objects held in your hand, and not just images on a computer screen? Whether you used a disposable camera, an expensive professional camera, or a regular snapshot camera, you ended up with an envelope of printed photos. Now, with digital photography, we often never even print out our photos, and if we do, we don't take much care in preserving them.

Since you couldn't see the pictures you took with the older cameras, you often forgot what you had taken photos of by the time the roll was finished. You might go on a family trip and take four or five rolls of photos, not getting them developed until you got home and went to the drugstore. If you were especially anxious, you would pay extra to have them developed in one hour. You would hang around close by, checking your black sport watch repeatedly until it was finally time to pick up the pictures.

Looking through the photos was a fun activity and a great way to relive the memories of the vacation. You might come across a funny shot of the elephant at the zoo, or a sill picture of your cousin with the men's sport watch he bought at the gift shop before a mountain hike. Putting the photos in an album was also a fun thing to do.

These days, digital cameras display the photos immediately after they are taken. When you aren't satisfied with a photo, you simply erase it and take another one. While in some ways, this enhances our artistic control, it robs us of the element of surprise. We look through our photos several times each day, instead of waiting until the end of a trip to come across ones that we forgot we had taken.

Not only have we lost the surprise, but we have also lost the necessity of physical photo albums. More often than not, we simply take the digital camera, hook it up to our computer, and transfer the photos onto a CD, onto our hard drive, or onto a social networking site.

The advantage of digital photos is that they take up less space, and they are easier to share with people in other places. But you cannot have the same social experience around a computer screen as you can have sitting on a couch and passing around an album or a stack of photographs.

With some effort, though, we can take advantage of the convenient things about digital photography, and preserve many of the good things about print photos. Almost every drug store with a photo developing service will also have a machine where you can order print photos. You can adjust your photos before you order prints, by cropping them or changing the colors. With a few scrapbooking tools, you can make beautiful albums, using the convenience of the digital age to enhance them!

Frequently Asked Questions...

How or where can I get digital photos printed to hang on walls?

I'm looking to get digital photos printed out in larger sizes to hang on my walls, with the best quality possible. How should I do this; should I just take them to Walgreens, Walmart, etc. (Has anyone done this and been happy with the quality they received?) I was thinking maybe Wolf/Ritz camera would do it nicer, but I heard they actually use the same machine as Walgreens, Walmart, etc. Any suggestions/recommendations?
