A lot of Spanish painters have put a legacy in the world of painting, and during Spain’s Golden Age or what is called El Siglo de Oro; a number of amazing Spanish painters were celebrated. However, one painter that became most famous of them all is Diego Velasquez; he is regarded as one of the most influential and most adored master in his own time. King Philip IV and his chief minister are only a few of the powerful friends Velasquez has; he made paintings for the royal family and to people with position and high nobility, presenting his technique and skills in all his paintings.

Diego Velasquez was given life in June 5, 1599 in Seville and he is the eldest of six children and came from a family of average class. It’s quite amazing that this painter’s skill was discovered so early, and that because of this he was able to gain a tutelage in the workshop of Francisco Pacheco when he was but eleven years old. Eventually, Diego Velasquez fell in love with and became the husband his master’s daughter and for a while, he supported his family by producing paintings with religious themes which he sold to churches; he also made paintings for taverns, and offered his services as a portraitist.

Many exceptional artworks made a name for Diego Velasquez’s career as a painter; he is one of the few Spanish painters who could really be called a master in his artistry because of the many great pieces he produced in his lifetime. One famous painting that he did when he met Marquez de Spinola is the Surrender of Breda; the painting presents the victory of Spinola and when it was shown to Spinola he was captivated and greatly revered the brilliance of how Velasquez captured such emotions and expressed them through realism in his portraits. Another artwork which may be the most reknowned one credited to his name, is The Maids in Honour or Las Meninas; uniquely, he painted himself inside the painting, quietly working on a canvas at the background.

Spain has really shown herself to be a hub of culture and the arts, and being able to produce a painter in the skill of Diego Velasquez is quite an accomplishment.
