Graphic Design's Roots: Oscar Wilde, Influential In The Field

Form, style and arrangement all combined as key influences on late 19th century graphic illustrators. The man whose influence changed the way modern graphic designers look at a page and who introduced those elements was merely 26 years old when he passed away. This figure created a unique, personal vision of the style that is now known as 'Art Nouveau', which has been emulated ever since its creation. One of the most famous and infamous literary figures of this time period was Oscar Wilde, who was a patron of various artistic styles, he put forth that art was an end unto itself and neither moral nor ethical judgments should be put upon it. Wilde was drawn to Beardsley's style, which was much like his own writing style; rich, erotic and fanciful. The tale was illustrated in fantastical patterns, sweeping lines, and eroticism somewhat threaterning in its design.

 

The sophisticated juxtaposition of black and white space is a common theme in his work. Literally playing on a white surface, he makes use of larger planes and borders, or just darkness that will contrast with some delicate patterns. His page was commonly unbalanced and the artistic movement was displayed with sweeping, continuous and undulating curves. Although the actual characters found in his art are very simple outlines, their clothes or props are usually very detailed. This interactions between complicated details and simple, clean lines create much of the strength in his art.

 

A renewed respect for medieval and early Renaissance decoration and design combined with a fascination with imports from Japan became a rich source of inspiration to many late 19th century designers. The young illustrator's work was published in several famous periodicals, and became the source from which other artists copied him, both in Europe and the United States. By the late 19th century, poster art began to emerge as an art form in its own right. What was once a simple means of promotion and advertising was now taking the stage as a recognized form of art. As opposed to the typically black and white books of the period, posters were frequently produced in color. Poster design was usually focused on a single, bright, eye-catching element. Any words written to give information about an event or product were kept to a minimum. The man heading up poster design capitalized on his awareness that capturing your viewer's attention hinges upon simplicity and clarity. To that end, his colors were vivid and bright and his shapes were flat and uncomplicated. Much like an Impressionist painting, his lines would be somewhat fractured and hesitant. These early graphic artists created pieces that were to become the foundation of art nouveau design.

 

Other illustrators furthered their work, adding black outlines and spaces enclosed by flowing contours that characterize the proper art nouveau poster. His work is always characterized by willowy young girls in rather loose clothing, and with their hair that's long, flowing, and billows out in capricious forms. There was also a successful and famous art nouveau whose elegant posters featured rather narrow strips as well as a full length female figure. Such complex involved patterns use a range of sources for inspiration, such as fold art, Arab and Moorish decorating, Hebrew letters, Byzantine mosaics, Celtic themes, and Japanese wood cuttings.

 

The elegant art of these early graphic designers can be viewed via the many books and reprints of their work. Many dealers specialize in collecting and selling posters from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Quite often you can locate them at the larger international style antique shows in booths they've set up. These original pieces, in good condition, have been known to sell for thousands of dollars.
